Milling grade designed for titanium and superalloy applications

Walter has released a new milling grade, Tiger·tec Gold WSM36G, designed specifically for applications involving titanium alloys and other difficult-to-machine materials.

The grade features a multilayer physical vapor deposition (PVD) coating, with an aluminum titanium nitride (AlTiN) layer that offers high adhesion, topped with a zirconium nitride (ZrN) layer to facilitate wear detection. As the ZrN coating wears, the underlying violet-bronze AlTiN becomes visible, enabling operators to monitor tool wear more effectively.

The coating thickness has been optimized to ensure complete coverage of sharp cutting edges, and the surface finish has been refined to deliver a balance between toughness and wear resistance, according to the company.

It is intended for the machining of titanium alloys (ISO S materials) and is also applicable to nickel-based superalloys and stainless steels (ISO S and M groups).

This grade is designed for use with Walter’s P3204 indexable inserts, specifically for the Xtra·tec XT M5460 profile milling cutter. The P3204 insert features a fully ground circumference, which enables high process reliability, fine surface finishes, and efficient chip removal. The Xtra·tec XT M5460 cutter is available with ScrewFit adaptation, cylindrical-modular interface, or cylindrical shank, and comes in cutting diameters ranging from 8 to 32 mm (3/8 to 1.0 in.).
